ED Raids RG Kar

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched a significant operation on Friday, raiding multiple locations connected to a high-profile financial irregularities case involving RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.

The operation included the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-run institution.

The ED has initiated an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) to investigate alleged financial misconduct within the hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) currently detains Ghosh, conducting a separate investigation as mandated by a Calcutta High Court order.

In addition to Ghosh’s residence, the ED conducted searches at the homes of Biplab Sinha, Koushik Koley, and Prasun Chattopadhyay.

Authorities suspect that private vendors, identified as individuals, benefited from the financial irregularities associated with the hospital.

The raids are part of the ED’s broader investigation into possible money laundering connected to the case.

At the time of this report, ED officials were still awaiting entry into Ghosh’s residence, while raids were already underway at the properties of Sinha, Koley, and Chattopadhyay.

Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel oversee each of these operations.

Sinha, along with Ghosh’s bodyguard Afsar Ali and vendor Suman Hazra, was previously arrested by the CBI on 2 September.

The CBI is investigating the financial irregularities under court orders, while the ED has launched its investigation independently.

The ED’s investigative approach allows for greater flexibility compared to the CBI, which requires either state government clearance or a court order to proceed with investigations.
