A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team from New Delhi arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to investigate the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor.

The sole suspect in custody is Sanjay Ray, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police.

Ray, who is accused of committing the crime at the government-run R G Kar Medical College & Hospital while on duty last week, was transported directly to the CBI’s Central Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake for questioning.

The CBI has divided its resources for a comprehensive investigation.

One team of interrogation specialists will focus on questioning Ray and other potential witnesses, while another group will conduct field investigations at R G Kar.

Forensic experts will gather evidence from the seminar hall on the fourth floor, where the crime occurred, and interview hospital staff, medical students, and junior doctors to piece together the events of that night.

Meanwhile, Investigators will examine the victim’s and Ray’s mobile phones and call records to identify any other individuals involved in the crime, as city police initially suggested.

In related developments, Dr. R V Asokan, National President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday.

He met with the West Bengal chapter of the IMA and is likely to visit the victim’s family in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, later in the day.

Dr. Asokan is also likely to meet with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss the case and its broader implications.
