UK police have detained over 1,000 individuals in connection with a series of violent riots, arson, and racist attacks that have erupted across Britain over the past two weeks, officials reported on Tuesday.
The unrest started after misleading online information wrongly attributed the killings of three young girls in Southport on 29 July to a Muslim migrant.
This misinformation sparked widespread violence not only in cities across England but also in Northern Ireland.
The rioting has subsided somewhat in recent days following intensified efforts by authorities to identify and apprehend those involved.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council reported that police have arrested 1,024 people and charged 575.
Among those detained are a 69-year-old man in Liverpool for vandalism and an 11-year-old boy in Belfast.
Notably, authorities have charged a 13-year-old girl with violent disorder for assaulting a hotel for asylum seekers on 31 July.
Prosecutor Thomas Power expressed concern over the involvement of such a young participant, highlighting the fear and distress caused by the violent acts.
The recent riots resemble the 2011 disturbances in Britain, which began after police fatally shot a Black man.
That unrest resulted in approximately 4,000 arrests over several weeks.
The swift judicial response at that time is credited with helping to quell the violence, a strategy that appears to be in play once again as authorities work to restore order.
