In response to the escalating crisis in the Middle East, foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations have called for all parties involved to avoid actions that could further inflame the conflict. The statement from the Italian presidency of the G7, issued on Sunday, emphasizes the need for restraint and dialogue to prevent an escalation of violence.
“We call on the parties concerned to desist from any initiative that could hinder the path of dialogue and moderation and encourage a new escalation,” the statement said.
The call for calm follows a high-level videoconference where the ministers expressed deep concern over recent developments that could regionalize the crisis, particularly impacting Lebanon. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting the potential for a broader regional conflict.

The extraordinary G7 meeting was convened following a series of violent incidents. On July 31, the assassination of Hezbollah’s senior military commander, Fouad Shokor, in Beirut, and the killing of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, intensified tensions. Additionally, a rocket strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights resulted in the deaths of 12 children and teenagers.

In response, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah have accused Israel of being behind the attacks and have threatened retaliation. Israel, while acknowledging its involvement in Shokor’s death as a response to the Golan Heights attack, has not confirmed any role in Haniyeh’s killing.
As hostilities between Israel and Lebanon escalate, diplomatic efforts are being intensified to manage the crisis. The G7 reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing a ceasefire in Gaza and increasing humanitarian aid to affected populations.
In light of the worsening situation, Italy’s Foreign Minister has urged Italian nationals currently in Lebanon to leave immediately and advised against travel to the region. Similar advisories issue by other nations, including France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and Jordan.
The G7 consists of Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
