Prime Minister Narendra Modi described his visit to Austria as “historic” and “immensely productive,” highlighting its significance in enhancing bilateral friendship. In a conclusion of PM Modi’s Austria Visit – the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years – PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and affection extended by Chancellor Karl Nehammer, the Austrian government, and its people.

Arriving in Vienna from Moscow on Tuesday evening, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Federal Chancery on Wednesday morning, warmly greeted by Chancellor Nehammer.

The visit coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria, a milestone Chancellor Nehammer previously described as a “special honor.”

Following discussions, PM Modi emphasized the identification of new avenues for mutual cooperation and the strategic direction set for bilateral ties.

In a joint statement, PM Modi and Chancellor Nehammer addressed global geopolitical issues such as the Ukraine conflict and West Asia’s situation, underscoring strengthened relations based on mutual trust and shared interests.

They outlined plans for collaboration over the coming decades in infrastructure, innovation, renewable energy, hydrogen, water and waste management, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum technology.

PM Modi highlighted the acceleration of the startup bridge connecting youth and ideas, agreements on mobility and migration partnership, and increased cultural and educational exchanges.

Austria was invited to join initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Biofuel Alliance.

Addressing Austrian and Indian CEOs alongside Chancellor Nehammer, PM Modi urged Austrian businesses to explore opportunities in India, emphasizing India’s potential as the world’s third-largest economy.

He encouraged leveraging India’s economic landscape for high-quality and cost-effective manufacturing under the Make in India initiative, positioning India as a global supply chain destination.

PM Modi also met with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, discussing climate neutrality and bilateral cooperation.

He engaged with Nobel laureate Anton Zeilinger on quantum technologies and discussed spirituality, reflecting on their meeting.

PM Modi also met Austrian Indologists to discuss India’s rich history, philosophy, art, and culture, acknowledging Austria’s contribution to Indology.

Concluding with an address to the Indian diaspora in Vienna, PM Modi emphasized global optimism about India and highlighted similarities between India and Austria in democracy, shared values, and diversity.

“Our societies celebrate diversity, reflected notably in elections,” PM Modi stated to enthusiastic applause.”
