The Supreme Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to the bail plea of BSP MP Atul Rai from Ghosi. The court has given a four-week deadline to the state government for the reply.
This comes after a tragic incident where a 24-year-old woman from Ballia, UP, attempted suicide with a male friend outside the Supreme Court. They accused Atul Rai of rape and blamed Varanasi police for colluding with him and his relatives.
Both were admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in critical condition
Both victims succumbed to their injuries after nine days of hospitalization. Before the suicide attempt, they went live on Facebook, expressing distrust in the justice system and alleging police collusion.
Rai, already facing accusations of abetment to suicide, had been on the run until after winning the Lok Sabha elections. BSP MP was granted interim bail by Allahabad High Court on medical grounds on 29 January. However, his plea for an extension was rejected on May 17.
The court instructed him to surrender within ten days, given non-compliance with conditions.
