Live-in relationships have always been a matter of debates and discussions with regards to the Indian culture. Recently, Chhattisgarh High Court pronounced an important verdict in which the court called live-in relationships a ‘stigma’. Taking it further, the court said that it is a disgrace to the Indian culture. As per the statements on the court, this is an idea introduced to the Indians by western culture which does not fit into traditional customs followed by the nation. Chhattisgarh High Court gave this decision in a case related to Dantewada.
Here’s where it came from
The bench comprising Justices Gautam Bhaduri and Sanjay S Aggarwal issued firm remarks in a child custody case stemming from a live-in relationship. The father had petitioned the High Court seeking custody of the child, but the court dismissed the petition following a hearing. The court, in its ruling, made pointed remarks, stating that despite gaining acceptance in certain segments of society, live-in relationships still carry a stigma in Indian culture. It asserted that the concept of live-in relationships is perceived as foreign and runs contrary to traditional Indian customs and societal norms.
The court said that it is very easy for a person to come out of a live-in relationship. In such cases, the court cannot close its eyes to the plight of the survivor of the said torturous live-in relationship and the children born out of that relationship. The court has termed this relationship as against Indian beliefs.
