Last season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli, two prominent cricketing figures, grabbed headlines with their on-field altercation. The dispute erupted over Kohli’s confrontation with Lucknow Super Giants’ bowler Naveen-ul-Haq. However, when Gambhir, serving as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, faced Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) this season, fans were surprised to witness the two embracing on the field. Gambhir, speaking openly, emphasized the public’s craving for drama.
“It’s all about TRPs. The media often misconstrues our personalities. They thrive on hype. But positive hype is just as powerful,” Gambhir expressed on Star Sports, echoing the general sentiment regarding his rapport with Virat.
Following their unexpected hug in IPL 2024, Kohli candidly remarked that people were “disappointed” as they didn’t witness what they expected. Gambhir concurred with Kohli’s assessment.
“I completely agree with Virat. If there’s no drama for folks, they’re let down. As I’ve said before, when two individuals are mature, no one should interfere in their relationship. It’s between them,” Gambhir added, addressing the matter.’

Gambhir also light-heartedly praised Kohli’s dancing skills, remarking, “I couldn’t manage even one move if I tried. If I had to learn anything from Virat, it would be his dance moves.”
Moreover, Gambhir shared his expert opinion on the ongoing chatter surrounding batters’ strike rates in this season’s campaign, particularly focusing on Virat Kohli.
“Each player has a unique style. What Maxwell achieves, Kohli might not, and vice versa. A team needs a variety of batters in its lineup. If you load the XI with explosive batters from top to bottom, you might hit 300 but risk getting bowled out for 30,” Gambhir emphasized.
According to the former India star, the interpretation of strike rates is subjective and hinges on the game’s demands.
“When you win, even a strike rate of 100 suffices. But in a loss, despite a strike rate of 180, it goes unnoticed. That’s the reality,” Gambhir stressed, highlighting the fluctuating significance of strike rates in cricket.
