Gujarat University Orders Seven Foreign Students to Leave Hostel Amidst Namaz Controversy

Seven foreign students, including six from Afghanistan and one from East Africa, have been instructed to leave Gujarat University’s hostel premises due to overstaying, as confirmed by an official statement on Sunday. This decision follows recent tensions after a group of foreign students faced an attack for conducting prayers on the campus.

In the aftermath of the attack on March 16th, representatives from Afghanistan and Gambia visited the university to discuss safety measures with the vice-chancellor. Neerja Gupta, the vice-chancellor, stated to PTI that the seven students, who had completed their studies but remained in the hostel due to pending administrative matters, were asked to vacate.

Gupta assured that the necessary paperwork has been completed, and arrangements have been made for their safe return to their respective countries. The university has also informed the consulates of the students’ countries, ensuring a smooth transition for their departure.

With over 300 international students currently enrolled at Gujarat University, ensuring their safety and well-being remains a priority.

The incident on March 16th involved a group forcibly entering the university hostel and assaulting foreign students who were observing prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan were hospitalized as a result of the attack.
