Sanjay Nirupam
In a series of rapid developments, the Congress has expelled senior leader Sanjay Nirupam from Maharashtra for six years, citing his “anti-party statements.” This decision followed Mr. Nirupam’s removal from the list of star campaigners for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and signals of a proposed expulsion from the state unit to the central leadership.
The move to expel Nirupam stemmed from his criticism of the party’s alliance partner, Shiv Sena, and its leader Uddhav Thackeray. He had expressed discontent after the Shiv Sena announced candidates for Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, including one reportedly sought by Nirupam himself. Additionally, his remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, from the AAP – another ally of Congress, diverged from the party’s official stance.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced Nirupam’s expulsion, citing complaints of indiscipline and anti-party conduct. Earlier, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole had stated disciplinary actions were initiated against Nirupam for his statements.
Nirupam’s expulsion came after he defiantly responded to his removal as a star campaigner by criticizing the Congress. He hinted at revealing his next steps, indicating dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of the situation.
The fallout intensified as Nirupam engaged in personal attacks against Uddhav Thackeray and Amol Kirtikar, Shiv Sena’s candidate, accusing them of detrimental actions and involvement in scandals. His remarks exacerbated tensions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra.
Amidst speculation about his future moves, Nirupam hinted at potentially departing from the Congress fold. Both the BJP and factions of the Shiv Sena expressed openness to welcoming him into their ranks.
Nirupam’s expulsion underscores the challenges faced by the Congress party in managing internal dissent and maintaining unity within its alliances. It also highlights the complexity of political dynamics ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
