Oscar
Landmark Oscar Cinema: As a lover of cinema and of living beings in general today on the occasion of World Disability day it is the perfect day to talk about two films. Feeling through which released in 2019 and Coda in 2021.
They both are landmark films in more ways than one. They both made a lot of Oscar Buzz and Coda directed by Sian Heder even walked away with awards in three categories. Best picture, Best writing ( Adapted screenplay) and the historic one,was the Best supporting actor award for deaf actor Troy Kustor.
What is amazing is that in the film Coda(2021) the actors playing the main family are actually deaf except the actor playing CODA.
While the Dough Roland directed film ‘Feeling through’ (2019) has as its lead a deaf-blind person a first in the history of cinema.
I believe this is the best part of the film and brings a whole other level of nuance to the entire production.
The actor, Robert Tarango in the leading role as Artie is a delight to watch and more importantly feel through.
It was even nominated for best live-action short film and saw its lead actor Robert Tarango even walk the Red carpet excitedly.
I hope it will also encourage other filmmakers to take this step because the community of special people is surely going to be happy to knock on studio doors and give auditions.
Landmark Oscar Cinema: The lead actor in the making of ‘Feeling Through’ has mentioned wanting to act and how if there is opportunity people from his community will want to act and be part of all kinds of things.
It’s true everyone deserves a full life. Just seeing him talk excitedly like a little child and his dream of becoming a movie star being realised was heartwarming. The actor is simply brilliant both behind and on screen and we want to see more of him.
Coda won three academy awards that year. The Oscar award acceptance speech by the actor Troy Kustor for his performance as a supporting actor is overwhelming. He gave the speech in sign language with the help of an interpreter. Ironically, he left everyone speechless. The audience gave him a standing ovation and clapped for him in sign language. It is a moment etched in the history of humankind. It makes you believe in the goodness of people.
Hope we will see more of this unrepresented community which not only wants to be part of cinema but also have access to more films and other forms of entertainment available for it with ease of accessibility.
I hope Bollywood will take a hint and follow suit.
Actors, Robert Tarango ( Feeling Through 2019) and Troy Kustor (Coda 2021), made history without saying a word. We have a lot more at our disposal.
If you haven’t watched Coda and Feeling through it, it’s a much watch any given day. You might end up discovering a lot just by watching these films. It’s time we learnt some wonderful things from this special community of specially-abled people.
The world was made for everyone to share equally!
