Independent Candidates Supported by Imran Khan’s Party Make Unexpected Gains in Pakistan Elections

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has only officially released a handful of results, primarily from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly

Amidst unusual delays in announcing the results of Pakistan’s general elections, independent candidates backed by the incarcerated former premier Imran Khan’s party have emerged unexpectedly as frontrunners, sparking allegations of rigging. The election, marked by allegations of irregularities, sporadic violence, and a nationwide mobile phone shutdown, has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

Despite initial delays, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has only officially released a handful of results, primarily from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) assembly, where candidates supported by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party are leading. Meanwhile, private media outlets indicate PTI-backed candidates leading in several constituencies nationwide.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has acknowledged a significant voter turnout in favor of PTI, though it remains optimistic about its own prospects, particularly for its leader Nawaz Sharif. Initial results show former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif winning the NA 123 seat, while other parties also secure victories.

The excruciating delay in result announcements has sparked frustration among political parties, with allegations of fraud and calls for swift resolutions. PML-N leader Maryam Aurangzeb has demanded immediate result announcements, expressing concern over fluctuating outcomes.
