Brig (retd) AJS Behl, who fought valiantly in the 1962 India-China war, died on Tuesday at the age of 82, according to sources.
The war veteran, who was born in April 1941, died on Monday at Haryana’s Command Hospital, Chandimandir. They claimed he was suffering from age-related issues.
His final rites will be held on Wednesday in Chandigarh, they said.
In 1961, Behl was commissioned into the Indian Army.
“He was an artillery officer from 17 Para Field Regiment and participated in 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars. As a young officer, he fought valiantly against the Chinese forces at Namka Chu as part of 7 Infantry Brigade during October 1962,” a source said.

During the 1962 India-China war, Behl and his men were captured. According to the sources, he was repatriated to India the following year and rejoined his unit.
The book “1962: The War That Wasn’t” contains an account of his role in the war.
During his service, he also took part in the Rann of Kutch operations in 1965 and the India-Pakistan war in 1971.

According to the sources, Behl retired as the deputy director general of the NCC in Jammu and Kashmir in April 1995.
