Reclaim Public Parks Around Jama Masjid
In a recent development, the Delhi High Court strongly criticized the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for its apparent inability to take control of public parks in the vicinity of Jama Masjid. The Delhi High Court underscored the significance of preserving public spaces and asserted that bodies like MCD should not encroach upon them, emphasizing the adherence to the rule of law in the country.
Expressing a commitment to upholding legal principles, the court directed MCD to collaborate with Delhi Police to address the encroachment issue effectively. The Delhi High Court mandated that MCD provide a comprehensive status report within a stipulated four-week period, highlighting a commitment to prompt and transparent resolution.

The subsequent hearing for this case in the Delhi High Court is scheduled for December 21, indicating the court’s proactive approach to address the matter promptly. During the court proceedings, MCD’s legal representative informed the court that MCD does not currently have control over North Park and South Park in the proximity of Jama Masjid.
The legal representative disclosed that in 2007, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) transferred control of the parks surrounding Jama Masjid to MCD, adding a historical context to the ongoing legal dispute. MCD’s legal representative further explained that MCD officials faced obstacles in accessing North Park and South Park, illustrating the practical challenges involved.

In a recent turn of events, officials were granted permission to enter South Park, and MCD is now actively overseeing its maintenance. However, North Park remains under the jurisdiction of Jama Masjid authorities.
