PM Modi Praises Surge in Indian Patent Applications as a Testament to Youth Innovation

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the surge in patent applications within India, attributing it to the increasing innovative spirit among the nation’s youth. His comments came in response to a report from the World Intellectual Property Organization, which revealed a remarkable 31.6% growth in patent applications by Indian residents in 2022. This growth marked the continuation of an impressive 11-year streak, unrivaled by any other country among the top 10 patent filers.

The report also highlighted that, in 2022, China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany were the leading countries in terms of the highest number of patent filings. It is worth noting that while innovators from China continued to submit nearly half of all global patent applications, the country’s growth rate experienced a decline for the second consecutive year, dropping from 6.8% in 2021 to 3.1% in 2022.

Modi said on X, “The rise in patent applications in India demonstrate the rising innovative zeal of our youth and is a very positive sign for the times to come.”

In light of these statistics, Prime Minister Modi emphasized, “The increase in patent applications in India is a clear indication of the growing innovative spirit of our youth and bodes well for the future.” This positive trend underscores India’s potential to make substantial contributions to global innovation in the years ahead.
