Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone and briefed him on Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages.
He informed PM Modi about yesterday’s strike on the bus station in Zaporizhzhia, where dozens were injured in what he called a deliberate Russian bombing of a regular urban facility.
Zelenskyy stressed that while there is finally a diplomatic possibility to end the war, Russia is showing only its intent to continue the occupation and killings instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire.
Taking to X, he posted, “I had a long conversation with the Prime Minister of India @narendramodi. We discussed in detail all important issues – both of our bilateral cooperation and the overall diplomatic situation. I am grateful to the Prime Minister for his warm words of support for our people.”
“It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine’s participation. Other formats will not deliver results,” the post added.
The two leaders discussed sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy said it is necessary to limit the export of Russian energy, particularly Russian oil exports, to weaken Moscow’s ability to finance the war.
“It is important that every leader who has tangible leverage over Russia sends the corresponding signals to Moscow,” he posted.
Zelenskyy and PM Modi agreed to meet in September during the UN General Assembly and to work on an exchange of visits.
PM Modi thanked Zelenskyy and reaffirmed India’s consistent position on a peaceful settlement of the conflict. He reiterated India’s commitment to extend all possible support for the earliest restoration of peace.
The leaders, however, reviewed progress in the India-Ukraine partnership and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Taking to X, the Prime Minister posted, “Glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his perspectives on recent developments. I conveyed India’s consistent position on the need for an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict. India remains committed to making every possible contribution in this regard, as well as to further strengthening bilateral ties with Ukraine.”
Zelenskyy’s call to curb Russian oil exports comes days after US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on India to 50 per cent for buying oil from Russia despite repeated warnings.
India responded, calling the purchases essential for its energy security and accusing Trump of singling out India.
The Ministry of External Affairs said, “We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.”
