Venezuela Declares State Of Emergency After Twin Earthquakes

Venezuela has declared a nationwide State of Emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck the country within minutes of each other, causing widespread damage and prompting authorities to launch large-scale rescue and relief operations.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez announced the emergency measures shortly after the earthquakes rocked several parts of the country on Wednesday evening.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Delcy Rodriguez urged citizens to remain alert, stay safe and remain calm as emergency teams respond to the crisis.

The Acting President also confirmed the closure of Maiquetia International Airport after the facility sustained damage during the earthquakes. She said security forces, medical teams and civil protection personnel had deployed nationwide to support rescue and relief operations.

The USGS reported a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, followed a minute later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude tremor near the coastal town of Moron, about 160 kilometres west of Caracas.

The shallow quakes, at a depth of 10 kilometres, triggered strong tremors across much of Venezuela, including the capital Caracas.

Interior, Justice and Peace Minister Diosdado Cabello said the earthquakes damaged cities across Venezuela.

Diosdado Cabello said several buildings collapsed in eastern Caracas, but authorities had not yet confirmed casualty figures. He urged residents to stay out of buildings due to the risk of strong aftershocks and called for calm as emergency teams continued rescue and assessment efforts.

Tremors were also felt in several Colombian cities, while the USGS warned that the powerful, shallow earthquakes could cause significant casualties and widespread damage.
