PM Modi Offers Support To Venezuela After Powerful Earthquakes

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by powerful earthquakes in Venezuela and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the South American nation during the crisis.

In a message posted on X, PM Modi extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people of India to the Government and citizens of Venezuela, particularly to families who lost loved ones in the disaster. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured and said India stands in solidarity with all those affected.

The Prime Minister further stated that India remains ready to extend all possible assistance to Venezuela as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

The statement came after two major earthquakes struck Venezuela in quick succession, sending strong tremors across large parts of the country, including the capital city of Caracas.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck at 2204 GMT, followed just one minute later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor.

Both earthquakes occurred near the coastal town of Moron, approximately 160 kilometres west of Caracas.

The quakes originated at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometres, increasing the likelihood of severe ground shaking and structural damage.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a nationwide State of Emergency, while authorities closed Maiquetia International Airport due to earthquake damage.

Rescue teams, medical staff and security forces are carrying out relief operations across Venezuela.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed building collapses in parts of Caracas and warned residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks.

Strong tremors shook neighbouring Colombia as well, while the USGS warned the twin earthquakes could cause heavy casualties and widespread damage.
