PM Modi Pays Tribute To Democracy Defenders On Emergency Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tribute to the individuals who defended democratic values during the Emergency imposed in 1975, describing the period as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history.

Marking the 51st anniversary of the Emergency, the Prime Minister said the events of that time served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the Constitution and protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, PM Modi honoured those who resisted authoritarian measures and stood firm in defence of democracy. He said the Emergency represented a direct assault on the Constitution and democratic institutions that form the foundation of the nation.

The Prime Minister stated that the period witnessed the suspension of civil liberties, restrictions on freedom of expression and the arrest of political leaders, journalists and social activists. He said these actions weakened institutions that play a crucial role in preserving India’s democratic framework.

At the same time, PM Modi highlighted the courage displayed by countless citizens who refused to remain silent despite challenging circumstances. He praised those who defended democracy during the Emergency and said the Constitution continues to guide India through the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

Calling June 25 ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’, the Prime Minister said the day reminds citizens to safeguard democracy, civil rights and constitutional governance.

The Emergency, imposed on June 25, 1975, remained in force until March 21, 1977.

PM Modi said the courage of those who opposed it continues to inspire future generations to protect democratic values.
