The United States is deploying around 200 military personnel to Israel to monitor and support the newly agreed Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, according to reports from US media outlets.
A senior American official stated that the task force’s role will be to ‘oversee, observe, [and] ensure there are no violations’ of the truce, which marks the first significant step towards ending the long-running conflict.
The official added that soldiers from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey will be integrated into the US-led team, Xinhua News Agency reported.
The personnel will remain stationed in Israel, where they will handle logistics, transport, engineering, and operational planning in support of the ceasefire mission.
“They will not be in Gaza. No US boots on the ground in Gaza,” one of the officials clarified.
Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to halt fighting on Thursday, a deal announced by President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform, calling it the beginning of ‘Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace’.
As part of the arrangement, both sides consented to exchange prisoners and hostages, including approximately 20 Israelis believed to still be alive, along with the remains of others who have died.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the Israeli government had approved the landmark ceasefire, which follows a devastating two-year conflict that has drawn widespread international condemnation.
The truce will likely take effect within the next 24 hours.
Officials, however, indicated that US troops could begin arriving in Israel almost immediately.
Their assignment will involve coordinating the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza and managing deconfliction measures to ensure that all parties comply with the terms of the security framework.
