Ukrainian Navy Launches Drone Attack On Russian Warship In Late Hours

The Ukrainian navy has never extended its reach this far from home territory. It launched a drone attack on a Russian warship during the night near Novorossiysk. It is a Russian navy station in the Black Sea. According to Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which runs an oil terminal there, the port, which handles 2% of the world’s oil supply and also exports grain, temporarily stopped civilian ship traffic before starting up again.

450 kgs of TNT strikes the Russian Warship

Russian defence officials claimed that two Ukrainian maritime drones had attempted to attack the military facility but had been repelled and destroyed. Its brief statement didn’t indicate any damage. According to a Ukrainian intelligence source, a marine drone carrying 450 kg of TNT struck the Olenegorsky Gornyak, a Russian Navy landing ship with about 100 Russian servicemen on board.

Sources stated, “As a result of the attack, the Olenegorsky Gornyak received a serious breach and currently cannot conduct its combat missions.” It also mentioned that the operation had been carried out by Ukraine’s security service and the navy.

“All the Russian statements about a ‘repelled attack’ are fake.” The Olenegorsky Gornyak was shown in video footage being pulled to shore by a tug while substantially listing to its port side.

First time for Ukraine

The sea drones’ projected distance from their likely launch area to Novorossiysk was 740 kilometres, according to retired Ukrainian Navy Captain Andriy Ryzhenko. This would be a major extension of their range. “It was the first time … the Ukrainian navy projected power so far away,” he said.

The Olenegorsky Gornyak was mentioned by Ukraine, but no direct blame for the attack was given.  “We’ve open information that it is indeed damaged,” said a spokesman for the southern military command. Further adding to the statement he said, “it is absolutely legal to destroy the potential of the enemy in time of war.” Since Russia last month withdrew from a contract allowing the secure transport of grain from Ukrainian ports, tensions in and around the Black Sea have increased.
