UK To Collaborate With Popular Social Media Platforms To Tackle Small Boat Crossings Into National Waters

The United Kingdom has looked for a very innovative solution to curb the illegal entry of people into their national borders via sea routes. The nation is going to team up popular Social Media platforms – Facebook, TikTok and Twitter to control the entry of immigrants through illegal methods.

According to officials, social media companies would work with the National Crime Agency to combat the entry of people vie people smugglers who encourage asylum seekers to cross the English borders. With this, the immigrants will take the legal route and will be paying for their entry into the nation.

Prime Minister of UK criticised

The Prime Minister wants a number of posts deleted to help him fulfill his pledge to “stop the boats”. It includes those that offer group discounts, free parking for kids, and fraudulent document offerings.

Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats criticized the action as “too little, too late” and “tinkering around the edges,” respectively. The voluntary collaboration will work to steer people away from such material in the same manner as how it combats material that encourages extremism or eating disorders.

£11 million project to collaborate with popular Social Media platforms

There will also be an £11 million “online capability center” set up so NCA officials may collaborate with the Home Office on reporting the promotional posts. According to a statement from Downing Street, Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, TikTok, and X, formerly known as Twitter, have all agreed to the ideas. “To stop the boats, we must attack the vile people smugglers’ business model at its core,” Mr. Sunak stated.

He added, “That means clamping down on their attempts to lure people into making these illegal crossings and profit from putting lives at risk. This new commitment from tech firms will see us redouble our efforts to fight back against these criminals, working together to shut down their vile trade.”

Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the “strengthened collaboration” will ensure content promoting unauthorized Channel crossings “doesn’t see the light of day”.
