The United Kingdom has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn all British diplomatic staff, citing a deteriorating security environment as tensions continue to rise in Iran and across the wider Middle East.
Confirming the decision on Wednesday, the UK Foreign Office said the British Embassy in Tehran would now operate remotely.
It added that the withdrawal of staff was necessitated by the prevailing security situation in the Iranian capital.
The move comes amid heightened regional uncertainty following Iran’s violent crackdown on domestic protests and growing speculation that the United States may consider military action against Tehran.
Reports suggest that US President Donald Trump is weighing potential strikes, further fuelling instability in the region.
Adding to the sense of alarm, the United States recently evacuated some of its personnel from the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military facility in the Middle East, underscoring concerns over regional security.
Relations between Iran and several European nations have sharply deteriorated, with Iran summoning Britain’s envoy and other European diplomats, prompting the UK to call in Iran’s ambassador to London.
Despite the escalating tensions, Araghchi struck a more conciliatory note in a separate interview with Fox News, stating that Iran remained ‘ready for negotiation’ and had held that position for the past two decades.
Emphasising that ‘diplomacy is much better than war’, he urged Washington to pursue dialogue rather than military confrontation.
However, the Iranian foreign minister also blamed what he described as terrorist groups for the unrest within Iran, alleging it was part of an Israeli plot to draw the US into conflict.
The situation in Iran continues to remain tense and uncertain.
