Iran has issued a direct threat to US President Donald Trump, airing a provocative image of him from the 2024 assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
The broadcast was accompanied by the warning: “This time it will not miss the target.”
Iranian state-run television broadcast the images, which quickly circulated online after translation from Persian.
The display has intensified the verbal clash between Tehran and Washington, highlighting rising tensions in the region.
The warning follows repeated statements from Trump, who has suggested that the United States could take military action if Iran continues what he describes as violent crackdowns on protesters during growing economic and political unrest.
Earlier, Trump posted on Truth Social, accusing Iran of routinely targeting peaceful demonstrators.
“If Iran kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go,” he wrote, signalling a confrontational approach to Tehran.
The Iranian broadcast referenced the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, when gunman Thomas Crooks fired shots at the stage, grazing Trump’s ear.
The attack briefly halted Trump’s campaign appearances during the presidential elections and sent shockwaves through the United States.
In response to the growing threat and regional instability, the UK has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn all diplomatic staff, citing security concerns following violent crackdowns on protests.
The announcement follows US efforts to evacuate some personnel from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest American military installation in the Middle East.
Reports suggest that Trump is reportedly considering potential military strikes against Iran, further heightening tensions in the region.
