Trump, Zelensky Seek Ways To End Ukraine War Before Winter Talks Urgently

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opened talks in New York to find ways to end the war in Ukraine before winter.

Trump said the two leaders had built a strong working relationship and were pursuing a solution.

“We have a very good relationship going, the two of us, and we’re — the president and I are trying to figure out a solution,” Trump said. “And I think it’s going to happen. I really do; I believe it’s going to happen.”

Zelensky thanked Trump for his support and acknowledged bipartisan backing in the United States. He cited a sanctions measure linked to Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

“I hope that we will end this war and President Trump will help us to end this war,” Zelensky said. “And I think that we needed to do as quickly as possible, before winter.”

Trump echoed him: “Before winter. Big thing, before winter.”

The leaders did not reveal details of a possible agreement. Trump said he did not want to discuss potential concessions before negotiations progressed.

He praised Ukrainian forces and leadership, calling them ‘very capable’.

Trump described Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s refining capacity as a “serious hit” and said they had affected diesel prices.

He said Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to meet Zelensky and referred to their earlier meeting in Alaska. He did not confirm another meeting in Miami.

Trump said both leaders wanted the war to end because ‘a lot of people’ were being killed. The talks were expected to cover military production, including possible Patriot missile production in Ukraine.

The meeting followed a September 6 Kyiv visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. They discussed a durable peace framework, future talks, and winter air defence and energy support.
