A security scare briefly interrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after a gunman opened fire at a hotel hosting the high-profile gathering, attended by top US leadership, including US President Donald Trump.
The incident took place late on Saturday night, when an armed individual reportedly forced entry past security barriers and discharged a weapon inside the venue.
Law enforcement officers quickly intervened and detained the suspect, preventing further escalation.
In remarks during an interview with 60 Minutes, Trump said he did not feel alarmed during the episode, describing the situation as part of living in uncertain times. He explained that he initially tried to observe what was happening before following instructions from security personnel, who directed him and others to take cover.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden panic in the hall, with attendees diving for safety after hearing what sounded like gunfire.
The President noted that the First Lady appeared shaken but managed the situation calmly.
Authorities later revealed that the suspect, a 31-year-old man, had circulated a message to relatives shortly before the attack, indicating an intention to target members of the administration.
Trump characterised the individual as mentally unstable and radicalised, adding that family members had reportedly raised concerns about his behaviour.
The President commended the swift response by security agencies, highlighting how quickly the threat was contained. He also acknowledged that while the breach raised questions about security, the attacker apprehended without causing casualties.
Officials reported no injuries or fatalities and confirmed that even personnel closest to the scene remained unharmed.
Despite the disruption, Trump said he wanted the event to continue. He said such incidents should not derail public gatherings.
The US President later returned to the White House. He said those present shared a sense of solidarity as the situation remained under control.
Investigators are continuing to examine the suspect’s communications and background to establish a clear motive.
The writings reportedly contained aggressive language and references to government officials.
The episode has once again drawn attention to concerns about political violence in the United States. It has focused attention on events involving senior leaders. These events typically involve extensive security arrangements.
