At the World Economic Forum in Davos, U S President Donald Trump delivered a blunt geopolitical message to Europe. He accused NATO members and traditional allies of depending too heavily on American military power and financial backing.
He argued that the United States continues to shoulder the greatest burden while others fail to defend their own interests.
Trump said NATO treats the United States unfairly. He told global leaders that Washington pays far more than its allies for Europe’s security.
He added that America gives much and receives little in return.
The U S President claimed NATO would not function in its current form without his intervention. He said he forced alliance members to raise defence spending after years of ignoring commitments.
Trump argued that many countries failed to meet even the earlier target of spending two per cent of GDP on defence. He claimed they now commit to much higher levels because of his pressure.
Donald Trump questioned whether European allies would defend the United States if it faced an attack. He said America would fully support them but expressed doubt about their willingness to reciprocate.
Turning to Ukraine, Trump said the war should never have started. He blamed leadership failures after his previous term.
He said Washington has spent enormous sums on the conflict while Europe benefits the most.
Donald Trump claimed the U S has provided around $350 billion to Ukraine and NATO. He stressed that America remains geographically distant from the war.
Trump described the conflict as a humanitarian disaster. He cited heavy monthly casualties and called the war a bloodbath.
The U S President said his sole interest lies in stopping the fighting. He added that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appear open to negotiations.
Donald Trump argued that the war serves European interests more than American ones. He questioned why the United States continues to carry the main responsibility.
Trump accused European nations of exploiting American economic and military support for decades. He warned that the U S would no longer subsidise global security.
Trump recalled using tariff threats to force compliance from allies. He said national security justified such pressure.
U S President Donald concluded by warning that U S patience has limits and alliance loyalty cannot remain one-sided.
