Trump Orders Withdrawal Of National Guard From Chicago, Los Angeles, And Portland

US President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of the National Guard from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland, days after the Supreme Court blocked his deployment plan.

Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social that the Guard had significantly reduced crime in the cities and criticised local Democrat mayors and governors as ‘greatly incompetent’. He added that the troops could return in a much different and stronger form if crime rises again.

The announcement follows a 6–3 Supreme Court ruling against the Trump administration’s proposal to send National Guard units to Chicago to protect US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

“At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to identify a source of authority that would allow the military to execute the laws in Illinois,” the Court noted in its order.

The dispute began in October when Trump federalised 300 members of the Illinois National Guard for deployment in and around Chicago. Texas National Guard personnel were subsequently sent to the city.

On 9 October, the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois issued a temporary restraining order preventing the deployment of the Guard.

The Seventh Circuit Court later upheld the federalisation but prohibited actual deployment, prompting the administration to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Trump has maintained that the deployment was necessary to counter rising crime, a position contested by Democrats, who allege political motivations behind the moves.

The withdrawal underscores continuing disputes over federal authority, local governance, and law enforcement in major US cities.

The President’s comments suggest potential future action if crime trends worsen, signalling that the National Guard could return under different circumstances.
