Trump Makes Unusual Visit To New York Mayor Mamdani’s Residence

US President Donald Trump made an unusual visit to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s official residence, Gracie Mansion, during his visit to New York for the United Nations high-level week.

The meeting on Monday drew attention because Trump and Mamdani hold sharply different political positions.

Mamdani has described himself as a Democratic Socialist, while Trump has frequently criticised socialism. Mamdani had also previously referred to Trump as a ‘fascist’.

Following their meeting, however, Trump praised Mamdani, saying he was ‘off to a good start’ and predicting he would be ‘a great’ mayor.

The visit marked the first time in 44 years that a US president had visited New York’s mayor at the official residence.

Housing emerged as a key area of discussion. Mamdani has proposed developing a new neighbourhood with 12,000 housing units above a rail yard, a project he said would require federal assistance. Trump has also outlined plans aimed at addressing the US housing shortage.

Mamdani said he raised his concerns about several Trump administration policies, including immigration enforcement and the withdrawal of temporary immigration protections for people from countries facing instability. He said he discussed ways to protect New Yorkers, including immigrants.

The two also discussed press freedom, with Mamdani supporting media access and Trump defending restrictions on some news organisations.

Trump and Mamdani had previously met at the White House in February. Trump praised Gracie Mansion, while Mamdani was also scheduled to meet Senator Bernie Sanders.
