72nd National Film Awards To Be Presented By President Murmu In Gujarat

President Droupadi Murmu will present the 72nd National Film Awards at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on Tuesday, honouring achievements in Indian cinema for 2024.

For the first time, the Centre will hold the prestigious ceremony outside the national capital as it takes the event to different parts of the country.

Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 for his contribution to Indian cinema and a career spanning more than five decades. The government announced the honour earlier this month following the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee.

Instituted in 1954, the National Film Awards recognise excellence in feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema across India’s languages, regions and cinematic forms.

For the 2024 film year, Article 370 has won Best Feature Film, while Bhangaar has won Best Non-Feature Film and Ram-Nami Best Documentary.

Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan will share the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for Bramayugam and Chandu Champion, respectively. Yami Gautam will receive Best Actress in a Leading Role for Article 370.

Randeep Hooda will receive Best Debut Film of a Director for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. Kalki 2898 AD has won Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, while Rajkumar Periasamy will receive Best Direction for Amaran.

Captain Miller won Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values, while Pushpa: The Rule Part-02, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Stree 2 also received honours.

The awards span several Indian languages, with a Santhali film being honoured in the Non-Feature Film section for the first time.

The ceremony in Ekta Nagar aims to showcase India’s linguistic, cultural and cinematic diversity.
