EAM Jaishankar, EU & Indo-Pacific Foreign Ministers Discuss Cooperation To Uphold International Law

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met European Union (EU) and Indo-Pacific foreign ministers in New York and discussed cooperation to uphold international law and strengthen multilateral action.

Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said the informal meeting covered cooperation between Europe and the Indo-Pacific to defend the fundamental principles of international law.

Jaishankar said he appreciated meeting his EU counterparts and discussed India-EU cooperation, multilateral issues and current developments in the Gulf, Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun were among the Indo-Pacific representatives attending the meeting.

Sikorski said the ministers also discussed strengthening the UN’s role in maintaining international peace and security and coordinating positions in international forums.

Developing a common framework for technology, particularly artificial intelligence, also featured in the discussions.

The foreign ministers are in New York for the high-level session of the UN General Assembly, which begins on Tuesday.

Jaishankar also met Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis during the UN High-Level Week.

The two ministers reviewed the progress of India-Switzerland economic ties following the entry into force of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).

They also exchanged views on global developments and ways to strengthen multilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar described the meeting with Cassis as warm and said the two sides took stock of their growing economic relationship following the implementation of the India-EFTA TEPA.

The meetings come as India steps up diplomatic engagements during the UN General Assembly’s high-level week, with multilateral cooperation, global security, economic partnerships and emerging technologies featuring prominently in discussions with international partners.
