Trump Claims He Stopped India–Pakistan Nuclear War After Talking To PM Modi

US President Donald Trump has again claimed he played a direct role in halting a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan earlier this year.

Addressing a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said he used trade pressure and diplomacy to de-escalate hostilities, speaking personally with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and warning Pakistan of economic consequences.

Recounting events during the meeting, Trump said, “I’m talking to a very terrific man, Modi of India. I said, What’s going on with you and Pakistan?”

He explained that he warned Pakistan that continued conflict would block trade deals and could trigger severe tariffs.

“You’re going to have a nuclear war. Your head’s going to spin. You’re not going to end up in a war,” he recalled telling Pakistani officials.

Trump claimed that his intervention defused the tensions within five hours.

Jet Shootdowns & Previous Warnings

Trump also reiterated earlier claims, stating that conflicting forces shot down at least seven fighter jets during the conflict and suggesting that the actual number might be higher than publicly reported.

“USD 150 million planes were shot down. Maybe more than seven. They didn’t even report the real number,” he added.

He had previously cited five jets and claimed to have used trade threats to prevent further escalation, stating, “The war with India and Pakistan was the next level. I said, ‘You’ve got 24 hours to settle it’. They said, ‘There’s no more war going on.”

The White House later credited Trump’s efforts with securing a ceasefire following Operation Sindoor, an Indian military strike on terror camps in Pakistan and PoJK on May 7.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt cited the intervention as evidence of Trump’s foreign policy success.

India, however, strongly denied any third-party involvement. Officials confirmed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations initiated a call on May 10, leading to a bilateral ceasefire agreement.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba, claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians and triggered heightened tensions.

In June, the US designated TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist.

Welcoming the move, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “We welcome this designation as a strong affirmation of India–US counter-terrorism cooperation.”
