Trump Cites Venezuelan Oil Engagement As Key To Lower Fuel Prices And Inflation

Addressing the Detroit Economic Club, President Donald Trump outlined his administration’s energy, economic and security priorities, highlighting Venezuela as an example of what he described as successful US intervention.

He claimed that increased access to Venezuelan oil was helping to lower petrol prices and support broader economic growth.

Trump said Washington was now engaging with Venezuelan representatives and leveraging the country’s vast oil reserves to boost supply.

Referring to the operation as highly effective, he argued that importing Venezuelan oil for refining in the United States would ease pressure on domestic fuel prices.

He emphasised the scale of the effort, noting that transporting the oil would require dozens of the world’s largest tankers.

According to Trump, the expanded supply would translate directly into lower costs at the pump, with gasoline prices already falling sharply across several states.

Trump directly linked cheaper energy to easing inflation, arguing that lower petrol prices reduce costs throughout the economy, from transportation to everyday consumer goods.

He claimed that in multiple states, gasoline prices had dropped below key thresholds, reinforcing his argument that energy policy plays a decisive role in controlling inflation.

Contrast With Previous Administration

Contrasting his approach with that of the previous administration, Trump said the United States had been on a risky trajectory before reversing course.

He added that his government was now willing to cooperate with Caracas, presenting the engagement as mutually beneficial and growth-oriented.

Beyond economics, Trump tied Venezuela to his broader security narrative.

Trump accused the country of exporting criminal elements to the United States in the past. He said his administration was actively removing members of violent gangs, including the Tren de Aragua.

He also grouped Venezuela alongside other foreign policy actions he characterised as successful, reinforcing his claim that a strong energy strategy underpins national security and economic stability.

Venezuela holds some of the world’s largest proven oil reserves, though sanctions, infrastructure challenges and political instability have long limited production.

Shifts in US policy towards Venezuelan oil have historically influenced global energy markets, keeping the issue politically and economically significant.
