Rubio, Jaishankar Discuss Civil Nuclear Cooperation, Trade And Indo-Pacific Security

Washington witnessed renewed diplomatic engagement as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, focusing on civil nuclear cooperation, trade negotiations and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

Following the call, Jaishankar highlighted the breadth of issues discussed, noting that both sides exchanged views on trade, defence, critical minerals, nuclear collaboration and energy cooperation.

He added that the two leaders agreed to stay closely engaged on these priorities in the coming weeks.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also described the conversation as constructive, indicating that officials reviewed next steps in bilateral trade talks, cooperation on critical minerals and the possibility of a high-level meeting next month.

A key highlight of the discussion was India’s recent enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill.

According to US officials, Secretary Rubio congratulated New Delhi on the legislation, viewing it as a significant development in India’s civil nuclear framework.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Washington is keen to build on the new law to deepen civil nuclear engagement.

He noted that the United States sees opportunities to enhance cooperation, expand prospects for American companies, strengthen shared energy security goals and secure resilient critical mineral supply chains.

Beyond nuclear energy, both sides reviewed the status of ongoing bilateral trade agreement negotiations, underlining their shared interest in boosting economic cooperation.

The discussion also covered regional developments, with India and the United States reaffirming their commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

The call reflects sustained efforts by both countries to align on strategic, economic and security priorities amid evolving global and regional challenges.
