US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday spoke over the phone with External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, reviewing major areas of cooperation, including civil nuclear energy, trade, and regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
The discussion reflects both countries’ commitment to strengthening strategic and economic ties.
During the call, Rubio congratulated India on enacting the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India bill, a new law forming a crucial part of India’s nuclear energy framework.
He expressed interest in leveraging this development to enhance US-India civil nuclear cooperation, expand opportunities for American companies, and advance shared energy security goals.
The move also aims to secure critical mineral supply chains vital to energy and industrial needs.
The two leaders discussed ongoing bilateral trade negotiations and strategies to strengthen economic cooperation.
EAM Jaishankar tweeted that the call covered trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defence, and energy, and both sides agreed to remain in touch on these and other issues.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the conversation as ‘positive’, noting plans to discuss next steps in trade talks and explore a possible meeting next month.
Rubio and Jaishankar also exchanged perspectives on regional developments, reaffirming their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The conversation underscored shared interests in maintaining stability, upholding democratic values, and promoting security in the strategically vital region.
The phone call highlights the growing breadth of US-India cooperation, encompassing energy, trade, and regional security.
