Trump Cancels Talks With Iran Over Crackdown On Protesters

Speaking at the Detroit Economic Club, President Donald Trump said he had cancelled all scheduled meetings with Iranian officials until what he described as the killing of protesters in Iran comes to an end.

He linked the decision directly to reports of violence against demonstrators and framed the move as part of a broader pressure campaign against Tehran.

Trump publicly addressed Iranian protesters, urging them to continue demonstrations and to document those responsible for violence.

He warned officials committing abuses that the authorities would hold them accountable and impose consequences, regardless of the number of reported casualties.

Alongside the diplomatic freeze, Trump said fresh tariff penalties targeting Iran had come into force.

He explained that the measures apply to any entities conducting business with Iran, presenting tariffs as a central pillar of his foreign policy strategy.

According to Trump, economic pressure was designed to isolate Iran and weaken its leadership, which he sharply criticised.

While praising Iran’s history and people, he accused the current rulers of damaging the country’s prospects and claimed that sustained pressure could help bring change.

Tariffs Framed as Alternative to Military Conflict

Trump defended tariffs as a more effective and less destructive alternative to prolonged military conflict.

He claimed that his administration’s trade restrictions previously resolved international disputes and is now applying similar tactics to Iran and other countries resisting US trade and security demands.

He also claimed that tariffs created leverage that traditional diplomacy could not, adding that the financial cost imposed through trade measures would far outweigh their impact on the United States.

Placing Iran within a broader foreign policy narrative, Trump cited past operations against militant leaders and strikes on nuclear facilities as examples of what he described as successful US action.

He maintained that the pressure campaign against Iran was part of a wider effort to restore American influence and credibility on the global stage.

The United States and Iran have lacked formal diplomatic relations for decades, with tensions centred on Iran’s nuclear programme, regional role and human rights record.

Washington has long used sanctions, tariffs, and secondary trade restrictions to exert pressure without resorting to direct military action.
