Truly Splendid: PM Modi Praises Netanyahu’s Gesture In Traditional Indian Attire

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday praised his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, for wearing traditional Indian attire. He said the gesture reflected respect for India’s cultural heritage.

Responding to Netanyahu’s post on X, PM Modi reposted the message and wrote, “Truly splendid! Your fondness for Indian attire reflects your respect for the rich culture and traditions of our country.”

Netanyahu welcomed Prime Minister Modi to a dinner engagement dressed in a light grey Nehru jacket.

In a video shared on X, PM Modi was heard remarking, “It’s an Indian dress,” acknowledging the gesture.

Sharing the moment in Hindi, Netanyahu wrote, “Before our joint dinner, I surprised my friend Prime Minister Modi by wearing traditional Indian attire.”

The leaders are scheduled to visit Yad Vashem before holding an expanded bilateral meeting at the King David Hotel.

Discussions are expected to review the India-Israel Strategic Partnership, focusing on defence, science and technology, trade, and people-to-people ties.

Several MoUs across economic, security, and diplomatic domains are set to be signed, followed by joint media statements.

India is moving towards finalising a strategic partnership with Israel to acquire Iron Dome technology under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The proposed arrangement is linked to India’s ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’, also known as Project Kusha. The initiative aims to build a multi-layered air defence system to counter short-range rockets, mortars and drone swarms.

India is also exploring Israel’s Iron Beam laser-based system to complement platforms such as the S-400, with the goal of creating an ‘impregnable’ national security canopy by 2030.

During the visit, Modi will also meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog.
