In a deeply troubling incident, three teenagers, including the suspected gunman, were critically injured in a shooting at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado, on Wednesday afternoon.
The school, nestled in the foothills about 30 miles west of Denver, serves over 900 students.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting occurred around 12:30 PM on school grounds.
However, it remains unclear whether the shots were fired inside the school building or elsewhere on the premises.
Officials confirmed that none of the law enforcement officers who responded discharged their weapons.
The identity of the suspected shooter has not been released, but local media have indicated the individual is believed to be a student at the school.
Authorities have yet to confirm how the suspected gunman sustained injuries. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting.
All three critically wounded individuals were transported to St Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, according to hospital CEO Kevin Cullinan. The nature of their injuries has not been disclosed publicly.
The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and over 100 police officers from across the Denver metropolitan area rushed to the scene.
In a coordinated response, parents were instructed to gather at a nearby elementary school to reunite with their children.
“This is the scariest thing you could ever imagine,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley. “Parents were terrified, and so were the children.”
The incident has stirred painful memories of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, also located in Jefferson County, where 13 people were killed.
One of the victims from that attack died earlier this year due to complications from injuries sustained during the tragedy.
This shooting follows a spate of recent gun violence incidents in the US. Just days ago, a tragic attack during a Catholic Mass in Minneapolis killed two children and injured 21 others.
In a separate event, Charlie Kirk, a former aide to President Donald Trump, was reportedly shot and killed at Utah Valley University.
While authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community, the Evergreen shooting underscores ongoing concerns about the safety of students in American schools.
It also highlights the persistent issue of gun violence across the country.
