Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, welcomed recent steps aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.
He stressed that humanity as a whole seeks an end to the war and the return of peace and stability.
The Prime Minister urged the parties involved to continue engaging ‘constructively’ towards a solution.
“We welcome all the recent efforts in the direction of resolving the conflict. Hope that all the involved parties will proceed further constructively. We will have to figure out ways to end the conflict as soon as possible to restore the regional stability and peace. This is the call of the entire humanity,” PM Modi stated.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister posted on X, “Had an excellent meeting with President Putin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin. Discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in all sectors, including trade, fertilisers, space, security and culture.”
He further added that discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture, along with exchanges on regional and global developments, including Ukraine.
“We exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains a vital pillar of regional and global stability,” the post read.
Earlier, both leaders travelled together in the same car to the venue of their bilateral talks.
At the SCO Summit, President Putin, in his address, said Russia ‘highly values’ the contributions of India, China, and other strategic partners in helping facilitate peace efforts in Ukraine.
Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Putin noted, “We highly value the efforts and proposals of China, India and our other strategic partners, aimed at facilitating the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.”
The Russian President also referred to his August summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, noting that the ‘understandings’ reached there could open a path towards peace.
Prime Minister Modi has consistently reaffirmed India’s position in favour of a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, supporting all diplomatic initiatives to that end.
Significantly, just before his arrival in China from Japan on Saturday, Prime Minister Modi received a call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky briefed him on talks held in Washington with US President Trump and European leaders.
Describing the exchange as ‘productive and important’, Zelensky said India had indicated its readiness to contribute to peace efforts and to convey appropriate signals to Russia and other leaders during discussions at the SCO Summit.
