Sri Lanka Reports Over 27,000 Dengue Cases And 14 Deaths In 2026

Sri Lanka has reported 27,754 dengue cases and 14 deaths so far in 2026, with infections detected across all 25 districts, according to health officials.

Authorities confirmed that case numbers have increased compared to 2025, raising concerns ahead of the monsoon season.

The National Dengue Control Unit stated that the Western Province recorded the highest number of infections.

Significant case counts also emerged from Matara, Galle, Ratnapura, Kalutara, and Kandy during the first four months of the year.

Community Medical Specialist Priscilla Samaraweera warned that incoming monsoon rains could accelerate mosquito breeding and intensify transmission rates.

Officials observed increased mosquito breeding in schools, workplaces, religious centres, and both government and private institutions rather than in households.

Health authorities identified improper waste disposal as a major contributor to the dengue outbreak and urged stronger public cooperation to control mosquito breeding sites.

Officials also advised residents to seek immediate medical care if a fever appears alongside symptoms such as headache, vomiting, muscle pain, nausea, or skin rashes.

Dengue, commonly known as break-bone fever, spreads through mosquito bites and remains widespread in tropical and subtropical regions.

While most patients recover within one to two weeks, severe dengue can become life-threatening and may require hospital treatment.

The World Health Organisation reported a dramatic global rise in dengue cases, from 505,430 in 2000 to 14.6 million in 2024.

More than 12,000 dengue-related deaths reported worldwide in 2024 alone.
