Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, emphasized the urgent need for reforms within the United Nations and its affiliated agencies, while also advocating for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Alipov stated that India’s permanent membership in the Security Council could contribute significantly to fostering balance and representing the interests of the majority of the world, particularly countries from the Global South. He highlighted India’s successful non-permanent membership in the UNSC from 2021 to 2022 and its effective leadership during its presidency of the G20 as evidence of its diplomatic prowess and ability to navigate geopolitical tensions.

Addressing concerns about polarization within the UN, Alipov noted that such divisions complicate discussions on expanding the Security Council, especially considering the disproportionate representation of Western countries. He expressed skepticism about the promotion of new Western candidates for permanent membership while stressing the importance of aligning the Council’s composition with modern realities and acknowledging the legitimate aspirations of countries like India, as well as others from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Alipov highlighted the unprecedented growth in trade ties and economic relations between Russia and India, emphasizing their mutually beneficial cooperation across various sectors, including hydrocarbons, mineral fertilizers, agriculture, and diamonds. He underscored the positive atmosphere of trust in the business environment, which supports further collaboration between the two nations.
