With the next round of negotiations between the United States and Iran still unclear, US President Donald Trump on Monday asserted that any prospective agreement with Tehran would significantly improve upon the earlier Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump criticised the 2015 arrangement negotiated under Barack Obama and supported by Joe Biden, describing it as detrimental to US security interests. He suggested that ongoing efforts aim to craft a more stringent and favourable outcome.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed in 2015 between Iran, major global powers, and the European Union, was designed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.
Trump had long opposed the accord and formally withdrew the United States from it in 2018, a move that reshaped regional tensions.
Efforts to restart dialogue now appear fragile. While Washington indicated that figures including JD Vance, Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff could participate in upcoming discussions in Islamabad, Iranian officials have yet to confirm their involvement.
According to remarks reported by Tasnim News Agency, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran had not finalised a decision regarding further talks. He pointed to the recent US seizure of an Iranian vessel as a key factor complicating the situation, describing it as a hostile action.
Tensions have also intensified around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route.
The United States has reportedly enforced restrictions on Iranian ports. Iran has stepped back from earlier assurances to keep the passage open following a recent ceasefire.
Trump previously stated that Iran had shown willingness to meet US demands, including ending its nuclear and missile programmes entirely.
Iranian authorities, however, reject those claims and state that no such agreement exists.
