A dazzling century from Tilak Varma guided the Mumbai Indians to a dominant 99-run victory against the Gujarat Titans in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday.
Captain Hardik Pandya commended Varma’s match-winning innings, stating that the young batter rose to the occasion when the side needed a defining contribution. He suggested that such performances were a natural expectation given Varma’s ability and temperament.
Mumbai Indians posted a formidable 199 for 5, largely thanks to Varma’s unbeaten 101 from just 45 deliveries. His innings matched the franchise’s fastest century record and steadied the innings after early wickets. Naman Dhir added a valuable 45, ensuring the side regained momentum.
The victory also marked the end of Mumbai’s four-match losing run this season, a result Pandya described as particularly satisfying given the team’s previous struggles at the Ahmedabad venue.
With the ball, Mumbai delivered a clinical performance. Jasprit Bumrah struck immediately, while Pandya dismissed Jos Buttler early, putting Gujarat on the back foot. The Titans never recovered as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Pandya addressed the ongoing discussion about Bumrah’s role with the new ball, clarifying that the approach was tactical rather than unusual. He emphasised that Bumrah’s effectiveness lies in how he is deployed rather than when he begins his spell.
The bowling effort was well-rounded, with Ashwani Kumar returning impressive figures of 4 for 24.
Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar contributed two wickets apiece, dismantling Gujarat’s batting line-up with disciplined execution.
Following the comprehensive win, the Mumbai Indians climbed to seventh place on the table with four points from six matches. Their next fixture is a high-profile clash against rivals Chennai Super Kings on 23 April.
