President Announces Dissolution of Parliament In Bangladesh to Form Interim Government

President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday announced the dissolution of Parliament in Bangladesh soon, in accordance with the Constitution. He shared this news during a national address from Bangabhaban, his official residence, as reported by Daily Sun.

Earlier in the day, a significant meeting took place at Bangabhaban. The meeting involved Chiefs of the three armed services, political leaders, civil society representatives, and quota movement leaders. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman led the discussions on forming an interim government.

President Shahabuddin chaired the meeting, where a resolution was adopted to honor those who lost their lives in recent protests. The resolution included prayers for peace and forgiveness for the deceased. The gathering also reached a consensus to release Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia immediately. Additionally, it was decided that all prisoners detained during the recent movements would be freed.

The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining communal harmony and ensuring that it remains intact. The attendees included prominent figures such as BNP’s Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas, Jatiya Party’s GM Quader, Mojibul Haque Chunnu, and Anisul Islam, as well as Mahmudur Rahman Manna from Nagarik Oikya, and leaders from Hefazat-e-Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami, Zaker Party, and the Mass Solidarity Movement.

Notably, less than two months after General Waqar-uz-Zaman assumed the role of Bangladesh Army Chief, he was tasked with formally announcing the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This move is part of a broader plan to restore stability and address the turmoil that has affected the country of 170 million people due to violent protests.
