PM Modi To Visit Iconic Boca Stadium During Historic Argentina Trip

PM Narendra Modi will begin a historic bilateral visit to Argentina on Saturday (India time), marking the first official visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 57 years.

Ajaneesh Kumar, India’s Ambassador to Argentina, confirmed the significance of the trip in an exclusive interview with IANS.

“Although PM Modi visited Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit, this is the first standalone bilateral visit by an Indian PM in nearly six decades,” said Kumar. “This makes the occasion especially important in strengthening India-Argentina ties.”

Argentina is the third stop on a five-nation tour

PM Modi will visit Argentina as the third leg of his five-nation tour, following visits to Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago. His tour will continue with scheduled stops in Brazil (July 5–8) and Namibia (July 9).

As part of the official itinerary, PM Modi will pay tribute to Argentina’s national hero, General Jose de San Martin, by visiting his statue in Buenos Aires. Argentina’s President Javier Milei will host the Indian leader with a ceremonial welcome, delegation-level talks, and an official lunch.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that both leaders will discuss matters of economic and trade interest aimed at deepening strategic and commercial partnerships.

PM Modi to visit Boca Juniors Stadium in Buenos Aires

In a gesture celebrating people-to-people connections, Prime Minister Modi will visit the iconic Boca Juniors Stadium, home to Argentina’s most popular football club.

“Sports foster strong cultural ties between nations. Argentina is globally known for its football, and this visit will help connect with the people,” said Ambassador Kumar.

India-Argentina trade relationship strengthens

India and Argentina have significantly strengthened their trade ties over recent years.

The two countries elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2019 and celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2023.

According to the MEA, bilateral trade between the two countries more than doubled between 2019 and 2022, reaching a peak of USD 6.4 billion in 2022.

India emerged as Argentina’s fourth-largest trading partner during that period.

In 2024, bilateral trade rose by 33 per cent to USD 5.23 billion, making India Argentina’s fifth-largest trading partner and export destination.

Argentina remains a key supplier of edible oils, particularly soybean and sunflower oils, to India, further underlining the economic interdependence between the two nations.
