Allahabad High Court To Hear Linked Petitions On Gyanvapi Dispute On August 6

The Allahabad High Court is scheduled to continue hearing the Gyanvapi Mosque dispute on August 6, 2025.

The case involves a petition demanding an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) inspection of the mosque complex’s wazukhana area, excluding the section claimed to be a Shivling by Hindu litigants.

Rakhi Singh, one of the original petitioners in the Shringar Gauri case, has filed a civil revision against the Varanasi Civil Court’s order dated October 21, 2023.

The lower court had rejected the plea for an ASI survey of the wazukhana portion.

Singh now seeks High Court intervention to allow a more detailed and scientific examination of the site, citing the need for clarity on the structure’s nature.

The Hindu side claims that a structure discovered during a previous survey is a Shivling, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva.

The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, representing the Muslim side, argues that the structure forms part of an old fountain used for ritual ablution.

In a related development, Swayambhu Lord Vishweshwar and four others filed a separate petition.

This plea calls for an additional ASI-led scientific study under the framework of an older suit from 1991 concerning Lord Adi Vishweshwar.

The Allahabad High Court has clubbed both petitions—Rakhi Singh’s and the Vishweshwar case—for joint hearings to streamline the judicial process.

During a hearing on April 15, the court asked the Sunni Central Waqf Board and the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee to respond to the claims.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal is presiding over the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has issued an interim stay on all lower court orders related to the matter, including survey directives, to maintain judicial consistency across courts.
