PM Modi To Participate Virtually In ASEAN Summit, Confirms Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim

Following a phone discussion with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that he will take part in the 47th ASEAN Summit later this month through a virtual format.

Set to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 26 to 28 October, the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings will bring together regional and global leaders for three days of high-level dialogue.

During their exchange, the two leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation and considered new avenues to expand bilateral ties across multiple sectors.

In a message shared on social media, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim wrote, “Last night, I received a phone call from a colleague of the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi, to discuss efforts to strengthen Malaysia–India bilateral relations to a more strategic and comprehensive level.”

Underscoring the depth of the partnership, Anwar noted, “India remains an important partner for Malaysia in the fields of trade and investment, in addition to close cooperation in the sectors of technology, education, and regional security.”

Citing Diwali celebrations in India, Anwar said the Prime Minister would join the meetings virtually.

“I respect his decision and extended my greetings for a happy Deepavali to him and the entire people of India,” he added.

He went on to reaffirm Malaysia’s dedication to strengthening cooperation with India and enhancing ASEAN–India engagement ‘towards a more peaceful and prosperous region’.

Malaysia Prepares for High-Level ASEAN Gathering

With Kuala Lumpur preparing to welcome international delegates, Malaysia is likely to become the centre of regional diplomacy during the summit period.

More than 30 heads of state and government, representing ASEAN members and dialogue partners such as the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, will likely attend sessions at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Focusing on regional peace, economic strength, and inclusive growth, discussions will align with Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme of ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’.

The gathering will conclude on 28 October with a closing ceremony and the ceremonial handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines, bringing to a close a notable year of leadership for Malaysia in advancing regional cooperation and shared development.
