Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali on Tuesday as part of the second leg of his ongoing three-nation tour, marking a significant moment in India–Africa relations.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marks PM Modi’s first State Visit to Ethiopia and highlights the growing strategic importance of ties between New Delhi and Addis Ababa.
India widely regards Ethiopia as a key partner in Africa and within the broader Global South framework.
During their meeting, the two leaders are expected to actively discuss political cooperation, development partnerships, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.
As nations aligned on South–South cooperation, India and Ethiopia are likely to reaffirm their commitment. They aim to expand collaboration for shared growth and mutual benefit.
Indian officials view the visit as an opportunity to further elevate bilateral engagement, particularly in areas that support development priorities and economic connectivity.
Authorities in Addis Ababa have visibly prepared the city for the Prime Minister’s arrival, lining major streets with welcome banners, posters, and Indian flags.
The atmosphere reflects the anticipation surrounding the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ethiopia since 2011.
PM Modi, who began his three-nation tour on Monday, will arrive in Ethiopia on Tuesday and then proceed to Oman for the final leg of his journey.
In his departure statement, the Prime Minister underlined the importance of Addis Ababa as the headquarters of the African Union.
He recalled that during India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, India admitted the African Union as a permanent member of the grouping. This move marked a milestone for African representation in global governance.
PM Modi also expressed his intention to engage with the Indian diaspora and address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament.
He said he looked forward to sharing India’s democratic experience. He also aimed to highlight the role of the India–Ethiopia partnership in advancing the interests of the Global South.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit underscores India’s sustained commitment to strengthening ties with Africa. It also highlights India’s focus on reinforcing South–South cooperation.
