India Warns Pakistan Of Strong Action Against Terrorism At UN

During the UN Security Council Open Debate, India issued a clear warning that it will counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in all its forms ‘with all its might’.

India’s Permanent Representative P Harish emphasised the country’s firm stance on terrorism, signalling zero tolerance for acts originating from Pakistan.

“Let me be clear: India will counter Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in all its forms and manifestations with all its might,” India’s Permanent Representative P Harish said on Monday (local time).

India suspended the 1960 treaty, signed during Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure, in response to repeated terror attacks and wars that have claimed tens of thousands of Indian lives.

It will be held in abeyance until Pakistan, which is a global epicentre of terror, credibly and irrevocably ends its support for cross-border and all other forms of terrorism,” he stated.

“India had entered into the Indus Waters Treaty, 65 years ago, in good faith, in a spirit of goodwill and friendship,” P Harish noted. “Throughout these six and a half decades, Pakistan has violated the spirit of the Treaty by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India”.

Pahalgam Attack Cited as Latest Violation

The most recent violation came during the Pahalgam terror attack in April, in which Pakistan-sponsored terrorists carried out ‘religion-based targeted killings of 26 innocent civilians’, including Hindus and a Christian.

This incident prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

Harish criticised Pakistan for consistently introducing unrelated issues at the UN.

India also questioned Pakistan’s commitment to democracy, citing the 27th Amendment that grants lifetime immunity to its Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and allows military oversight of elections.

“Pakistan, of course, has a unique way of respecting the will of its people, by jailing a Prime Minister, by banning the ruling political party and by letting its armed forces engineer a constitutional coup through the 27th amendment and giving life-time immunity to its Chief of Defence Forces (CDF),” he said.

Harish highlighted the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the banning of his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as evidence of military overreach.

The core of Harish’s address centred on the UN’s leadership and the Security Council’s role in maintaining international peace. He called for urgent reforms, describing the current Inter-Governmental Negotiations process as ‘barren and bereft of productive outcomes’.

He emphasised the need for time-bound, text-based negotiations to enhance representation from underrepresented and unrepresented regions.

Harish added that the election of the next UN Secretary-General should be conducted with ‘greater transparency’ and that the new leader should reflect the aspirations of the Global South.

He criticised the current allocation of UN posts on a ‘division of spoils’ basis and insisted that leadership must be inclusive to remain legitimate and effective.

P Harish said, “Leadership by definition must be inclusive for it to be representative, legitimate, and effective.”
