PM Modi Tells Putin India Supports All Efforts For Peace In Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated that India continues to support all efforts towards achieving peace in Ukraine, asserting during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that humanity must move from an endless war towards an end to the war.

Holding bilateral talks with Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, PM Modi noted that the two leaders had previously discussed the situation in Ukraine and that Putin had briefed him in detail on all aspects of the conflict during their last meeting.

PM Modi described peace as a call of humanity and said all issues should be resolved peacefully and at the earliest. He invoked the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha, saying their message was to follow the path of peace.

PM Modi said Indians were eagerly looking forward to welcoming Putin and the Russian delegation to the BRICS Summit in Delhi next month. He said Putin’s visit would further strengthen bilateral relations between India and Russia and enhance dialogue and cooperation within BRICS.

Jaishankar’s Moscow Visit

Last week, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Putin in Moscow and handed over a personal message from PM Modi.

Jaishankar briefed the Russian President on deliberations under the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) and discussed regional and global issues.

Ahead of his meeting with Putin, Jaishankar co-chaired the 27th IRIGC-TEC session with Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.

According to the Kremlin, Putin said Jaishankar’s visit underscored the longstanding level of Russia-India relations and highlighted cooperation across government, interparliamentary and economic ties.

Putin noted that bilateral trade turnover had increased this year after declining slightly last year, crediting PM Modi’s personal attention to the relationship. He highlighted energy, fertiliser supplies, nuclear energy and high-tech cooperation as key areas on the agenda, while saying Russia was ready to increase fertiliser supplies to support Indian farmers and agriculture.

Jaishankar said India-Russia economic cooperation, nuclear energy and fertiliser ties had grown significantly, describing the relationship as a robust bilateral partnership.
